[Early in the morning, just before sunrise, Marco awoke in the forest of Luceti. He was cold, he was sore, but most importantly, he wasn't where he was supposed to be. After all the chaos in Trost, the silence of his peaceful surroundings was almost deafening. More startling was the discovery of a pair of wings, the source of the ache spreading across his back. It looked real, it felt real, but he had a hard time accepting that it was real. Only angels could have wings, right? Did he fall in battle somehow? He began to wish he'd paid more attention to the rantings of the Wall Religion, so he knew what sort of stories they told of the afterlife. The three 'Goddesses' Maria, Rose and Sina... He'd never considered any of that to be true.
His fear of having passed on was alleviated the moment he discovered the journal by his side and began to flip through it. Halfway through reading the 'Guide for Luceti', he accidentally activated the audio version of it and dropped the journal in alarm. Still, having an actual voice explain the situation to him made it that much more real. Luceti, other worlds, Malnosso, experiments, a war... This was going to take some time to get used to. And in all those sections, there wasn't a single mention of titans.
After a long time of just sitting and trying to comprehend the situation, he realized he should find this village the guide spoke of. The clothing store in particular would be helpful right now. It was the lights of the Community Buildings that led him in the right direction and a mere ten minutes of walking later, he found himself on the edge of the village. Cold as he was, every so often he'd find himself distracted by the sights as he made his way to the plaza. The enormous apartment buildings in particular kept catching his eye and he wondered if titans would even be able to reach you if you lived on one of the top floors. Not that it mattered here- he just couldn't help himself.
By the time he entered the clothing store, the sun was already showing itself on the horizon. It was a relief to find his uniform waiting for him between the stacks of odd, otherworldly clothing, body harness included. He knew he could just as well settle for civilian clothing, but he refused to. Not just because danger lurked around the corners, but because it felt right. He just graduated as a full-fledged soldier, after all. That's why it felt a little sore that the patch on his jacket was still that of a trainee. It made sense, as he hasn't been initiated into the Military Police yet, but boy did it sting. On the bright side, the uniform had been altered slightly to fit those odd wings.]

[After having changed into his uniform, with the journal tucked safely in the chest pocket of his jacket, Marco makes his way across the square to the grocery store. It's still early in the morning and he could go for some breakfast. In fact, if he's going to be living by himself, he should get some rations for his apartment. Food might distract him from the ache in his back, too. The only trouble is, he isn't used to such a wide selection of it.
The moment he enters the store, his eyes widen in surprise. Fresh fruit, meat, many different kinds of bread, cheese... What's considered a rare delicacy in his own world seems to be standard supply here. There's colorful candies, food in cans, food in jars, bubbly drinks, pastries... Herbs and spices and a lot of things he's never even heard of before. Part of him wants to try it all, but a much greater part of him is intimidated by this selection. The Guide mentioned that everything provided in the village is free of cost, but back home, taking food that doesn't belong to you can land you in jail. Or worse. What if a food shortage is around the corner for Luceti as well?
He spends a good ten minutes just staring indecisively at the selection of meats. Does he dare take a whole ham? Maybe he should ask someone. Just to make sure. The moment someone else enters the store, he approaches them.]
Excuse me?

Excuse me?

stare at candy she doesn't need and totally doesn't want because she's totally a mature adult but gets it anywayand get out), so she's a little surprised when she's suddenly approached by someone she doesn't know. ]Um, y-yes? Uh, did you need something?
no subject
I was just wondering... Can we really take whatever we want? No limitations?
no subject
Yeah! You can pretty much just take like, whatever. ...I know it's a little weird, but it's just kind of how things work around here.
no subject
Really? That's amazing. I don't even know where to start... [He casts a quick glance around at the wide selection again.] Is there anything you recommend?
no subject
Uh, p...potatoes, maybe? I mean, there are a million things to make with those. Or maybe spaghetti? I mean, that's pretty easy to make. The sauce can take a little bit of work though. O-or, um...
[She can't help but feel like she's not being much help.]
Um, like, what kind of stuff do you usually like to eat? Maybe it'll make it easier to figure out what things you might like...
no subject
Well... Fruit's always good. And eggs too. I guess I'd really like to make a meal with meat too. Maybe chicken. [... These three things together don't mesh well into a dish, he's pretty sure.]
Is that helpful at all?
no subject
Well, there's plenty of meat, so that's not a problem to get ahold of at all. Maybe ground beef? It's pretty easy to cook. Just toss it in a pan and brown it. And chicken soup is always good! You'll want to get lots vegetables to make that, though. You know like, carrots and peas and stuff. [But this is coming from a cooking nut. She knows that not everyone is as enthusiastic about it as she is.]
...But, if you didn't want to cook, you could just try Seventh Heaven. They'll cook pretty much whatever you want. Oh! And you should definitely try the bakery. The sweets there are absolutely amazing...!
no subject
Heh, sounds like I have plenty of things to try. I think I'll just start with something easy and work my way up from there. [Which means he won't be going to Seventh Heaven any time soon, but those sweets still sound alluring.]
no subject
[She pauses for just a moment. One can almost hear the gears turning in her head.]
...Ahaha, like, I can't really figure out how to say it!
no subject
Well, it's true that you have to learn the appreciate the simple things in life. If you don't, you'll be taking the greater things for granted. [...Or something like that.]
no subject
[Actually, she had been trying to think of a smarter, less lazy sounding way to say that easier foods take less time so if you're just hungry they're better than more complicated ones. ...But hey, what he said was way better.]
But if you ever wanted to try something more difficult, there are a lot of great cooks in the village. Everyone is pretty nice so I'm sure they'd help you out. [She'd offer to help herself, but she doesn't think of herself as teacher material.]
no subject
I'll give it a try, then. Thanks a lot for your help! My name's Marco, by the way.
no subject
[Though, considering it doesn't take a lot for something to be a "better thing" about Luceti.]
no subject
This place... Does it really get that bad? [He's having a hard time picturing the experiments in particular, even if the guide did give a few examples.]
no subject
[She doesn't want to scare him or anything, especially since he doesn't seem to have been in Luceti for very long. Then again, a lot of the experimenst were pretty bad. Memory wipes, rewriting lives, dragging people off, not to mention the drafts, sending off little kids-]
...Like, once they turned me into a dog for like, four days.
[That kind of gets it across without being too scary, right?]
no subject
Even so, the thought that something like that's even possible... It's amazing, bordering on terrifying.]
Those Malnosso must be very powerful to do that like it's nothing.
no subject
Yeah, a dog. I could still talk and stuff, but...it wasn't exactly a great experience, you know? [Another sigh.] And "powerful" is like, a total understatement. I've met people here who can like, do magic and fight ghosts and...I've even met people from other planets! That kind of stuff was like, impossible where I'm from you know?
[She's begun to smile a bit as she recalls the memories associated with the people she's described. However, her smile fades after a moment.]
But the Malnosso still have enough power to keep us all in this...bubble and do whatever they want. ...O-Oh, uh... [Wait, wasn't she trying to not freak him out? She forces an uneasy smile and laughs sheepishly.] I, um, guess I got kind of serious for a second, huh? Uh, s-sorry...!
no subject
He supposes he should be thankful the Malnosso are keeping them well fed. Fed and clothed and with their own living quarters... It's the sort of pacification that powerful rules don't need to give their subjects, because it's not as if the residents here could do anything about it if they decide to take all that away. What if they do take it all away? Best not to think about that, he supposes.
His face betrays just a glimmer of anxiety, but he's still smiling like it's nothing.]
No, it's fine. It's the truth, right? Everyone here should know what they're up against.
no subject
...Then again, like, some people don't take it as well as other people do, you know?
["Some people" like her for instance.]
no subject
Heh, don't worry. I'm not the kind of guy who freaks out easily. If there's any more truths you were holding back, now would be the time to share. [While he's trying to make a bit of a joke of it, he is serious about the sharing thing. It's better to be prepared for the worst.]
no subject
W-Well, there are the drafts...and the droids...um, what all do you know so far?
[She never really can tell what she knows that others don't.]
no subject
no subject
I think that's all of the important stuff. Just so you know, though, there's not usually like, any kind of warning when the experiments happen. They just kind of...do. And since I've never been on any of the missions, I don't really know much about them.
...S-Sorry. I'm, um, probably not adding anything too useful, huh? [She smiles a bit sheepishly and thinks hard for a moment trying to think of anything that might be at all useful.] Uh...Oh! Um, it's worth it to check the item shop sometimes! Sometimes, stuff just kind of shows up. I've even found things from home before...
